Downtown, Victorian homes and film in Astoria

Astoria has a long built history, and the city has a Historic Landmarks Commission to look after it.

Historic Astoria

Wikipedia notes that 44 Astoria structures and districts were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of 2020. The City of Astoria's Historic Landmarks Commission says its purpose is to promote the historic, educational, cultural and economic welfare of the public by preserving and protecting historic landmarks, buildings and sites. It reviews requests for exterior changes to historic structures. Owners who plan work on an older building should start there.

The Flavel House

The Captain George Flavel House Museum, at 441 8th Street, was built in 1885 in the Queen Anne style and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, according to Wikipedia. It is owned and operated by the Clatsop County Historical Society, a nonprofit. The society's site is astoriamuseums.org.

The Goonies

Wikipedia says much of the 1985 film The Goonies was filmed on location in Astoria, the setting of the film, with filming beginning in October 1984. The old Clatsop County Jail appears in the film's opening. Please remember that people live in the houses used in the film; Wikipedia notes the road to the film's house was closed to tours in 2015.
